The weather affect throughout the season has long affected NFL betting lines. During the beginning of the season, the weather isn’t that big of a factor when betting on NFL games, as generally speaking, cold and warm weather teams get about the same temperature. However, once season comes to a close and the playoffs begin, the weather seems to be the most important factor on the betting line.
But as much as weather plays importance in the latter half of the season, it is quite confusing to many experts as to how little the weather is considered when bettors handicap. The NFL has been the one sport that is notorious for high wagers and low win percentages. One of the many factors for this scenario is the fact that most sports bettors do not check the weather forecasts leading up to a game.
For instance, in the latter half of the season, sportsbooks tend to circle games involving warm weather teams travelling to cold weather stadiums. By doing so, the sportsbook essentially is telling the bettor, that these games will payout less, because the warm weather favorite does not play well in a colder climate. Yet instead of either avoiding the game all together or laying some points on a teaser for the game, most fans simply wager big outright.
More importantly, as we mentioned above the weather does not play a factor in the early season. Since this is the case, most fans put little stock in how the weather will affect the outcome of the game. Basically, when handicapping the weather, you need to know a couple of things. Firstly, the majority of NFL teams are pass offense oriented. Secondly, as the weather gets colder, the air gets choppier, making it rather difficult for pass oriented teams to throw the football.
